Google buys a fighter plane

In Google’s offices in Mountain View, California, it is as though the financial crisis never happened. Business is booming, so much so that Larry Page and Sergey Brin, its billionaire founders, have decided to treat themselves to a new status symbol. Sports cars are a dime a dozen in California, and fancy yachts seem only to attract dull guests such as EU trade commissioners. So they’ve bought themselves a fighter plane.

The 600mph Dornier Alpha jet, currently being converted from military to civilian use here in Seattle, will live at Nasa’s Ames research centre, conveniently located just minutes from Google’s campus. It’ll speed up those all-important business trips and provide a better adrenaline thrill than any Learjet.

For comfort, the Google twins have a couple of Boeings, a 757 and 767 – a refit of the latter attracted publicity when the interior designer was fired. The resulting rumpus gave a fascinating insight into Google-world. Included in the $10m (£6m) makeover was a pair of king-size beds, hammocks and a piano.

Currently the Google aircraft fleet, which also includes a couple of Gulfstream V jets, is worth more than $200m (£120m). That’s a bigger air force than that of Nepal or Albania. Google managed to secure runway rights from Nasa by promising to use the Alpha to carry out high-altitude atmospheric experiments for the space agency, in addition to paying a hefty $1.3m (£800,000) annual rent.

While Google is flying high, clouds are gathering over the rest of Silicon Valley.

Nearly a quarter of businesses surveyed here this month are planning to shed jobs - 10% of their workforce on average. Already Hewlett-Packard, the company that kickstarted Silicon Valley in the 1960s, has announced nearly 25,000 redundancies.

Identity Theft - ATTORNEY’s Advice - No Charge

Attorney’s advice after becoming a victim of identity theft.

ATTORNEY’s ADVICE - NO CHARGE

Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company.

Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have first hand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(S) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more.

But here’s some critical information to limit the damage in case

this happens to you or someone you know:

1) Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put ‘PHOTO ID REQUIRED.’

2) When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number o n the ‘For’ line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won’t have access to it.

3) Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.

4) Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We’ve all heard horror stories about fraud that’s committed on us in stealing a Name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.

5) We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6) File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here’s what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)

7) Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the internet in my name.

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves’ purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your

wallet, if it has been stolen:

· Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

· Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742

· Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289

· Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

We pass along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about everything. If you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.

embed Youtube with Full Screen into sharepoint blog

Our office has recently decided to go with sharepoint for an intranet.  One of the main questions was.. can I embed video into sharepoint blogs?

After finding out

There is the way of using the “Contenet Web Editor” webpart.  The thing is if the video changes, you have no history like you do with a normal blog.

The only true way to get this to work, is to embed in a blog.

I found 2 sites

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-5nfadPNoI (This link was great walk through but did not work for me)

2) This was the foundation of the code I created.

Clients Find Postini Cans Spam For Good

By Chris Coulson, MCSE, MCP, Network Consultant

(Editor’s Note: Due to reader interest and many positive comments, we are repeating this article from a previous edition. Original Article Here )

Kudos keep coming our way from clients who have experienced the relief from Spam that their new Postini Service delivers, and we have documented proof (see chart below). Here’s a very enthusiastic one:

“The filtering is very effective! I have locked down our exchange server to only accept connections from Postini’s servers and we now get very little Spam (still see one or two once in a while). Also, I have not had to deliver any messages yet in my quarantine folder! The other noticeable improvement is the amount of traffic we have removed from the gateway! If you get the chance to see our Postini filtering reports you will see what I mean!”

If each of your company employees spends an average of 15 minutes per day clearning spam from his or her email box, how much time and money does that add up to each year? Add to that the savings resulting from NOT having to add bigger hard drives or more Internet bandwidth, and you will understand why our clients are so satisfied with their decision to use Postini.

This indicates the value of the Postini Anti-Spam solution. Significantly less e-mail traffic, lower disk storage needs, less user action and anti-virus support as well. Time saved equals lower costs.

If your e-mail systems have been a source of concern and frustration at your business, we have good news: SN Business Solutions can implement this leading solution in your business in a very short period of time. You, too, will immediately begin to see the positive results.

The outstanding benefits that the Postini service provides include:

• Reduction in Spam support and management in your business

• E-mail filtering through Postini’s managed e-mail security service which is located between the Internet and your company’s e-mail gateway; Postini blocks unwanted e-mail before it hits your corporate mail server, significantly lightening the load on your server, IT staff and end-users.

• A very high rating in anti-spam effectiveness with the best overall balance of accuracy at 97% and false positives at .08%

• A strong anti-virus defense that has blocked billions of viruses through Postini servers in the past few years

• A decrease in e-mail server storage since spam is filtered at the Postini servers and not on corporate e-mail servers

You may read the original Postini article written by Director of Information Technology Consulting Services Chip Hayden, MCP, by clicking here.

We have included, below, a chart that details the amount of inbound spam stopped for a dozen of our clients during the month of February. The chart indicates that 2.3 million e-mail messages were sent to the domains of the clients listed in the report. Only about 198,000 were sent to valid e-mail addresses, about 118,000 or 60% were blocked as known SPAM and were never seen by our clients, about 62,000 or 31% were deemed as good e-mails and were forwarded to in-boxes, and about 17,000 or 9% were questionable and were sent to a quarantine folder.

RealPlayer is badware

Real Rhaposdy has been labed Badware.

Here is what StopBadWare.Org is reporting…

“Interestingly, RealPlayer 10.5 and RealPlayer 11, both of which are distributed widely, both violate our badware guidelines, but in different ways.

RealPlayer 10.5 is badware because it doesn’t tell the user that its “Message Center” feature will pop up ads from the system tray if the user doesn’t register the application.

RealPlayer 11 is badware because it installs the Rhapsody Player Engine without notifying the user. When the user uninstalls RealPlayer, Rhapsody Player Engine is left behind, unless the user also knows to uninstall it separately.”

For more information go on over to StopBadWare.Org (Blog) and (Full Alert)

As you can see it’s not a serious issue, but does violate the End User License Agreement.
